Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies 2019 - Are you ready?
Welcome back my fellow readers! Below you will find a list of 5 upcoming sci-fi movies that are set to hit our local cinema screens this year, so have a little look & let your appetite be wetted!
1.) Ad Astra - As far as the storyline goes, Ad Astra sounds very promising. I’m sold on anything that is in conjunction with space/universe, so when the description is ‘Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet. His journey will uncover secrets that challenge the nature of human existence and our place in the cosmos’, one could only be immediately intrigued.
I’m by no means a Brad Pitt ‘fanboy’, but I do like his acting ability & I’ve enjoyed every film that he’s been in, thus far. This movie, directed by James Gray, also stars Tommy Lee Jones, so something tells me this will be a good film, especially with these two Hollywood giants involved.
Roll on Ad Astra!
2.) Dark Phoenix - Ever since I was a kid (which wasn’t that long ago, I can assure you), I simply adored The X-Men. I would watch their cartoons religiously & get caught up in that world within seconds of it being on the TV. It really was something I could never ignore/overlook. The X-Men demanded my respect/time & that’s exactly what it got.
I can appreciate from a neutral’s perspective/outlook, that they may have over-produced The X-Men movies over the course of the last 20 years & although that may be true, whether you’re a lover of the franchise or not, they have all been more than entertaining & genuine movies of escapism. They may not have all been 5 star movies, yet for me, they have always delivered, in one way or another.
Dark Phoenix is the latest instalment in the franchise & focuses on Jean Grey, who, as far as we are aware, is the most powerful of all X-Men. In fact, Dark Phoenix is the very thing she becomes in this movie, transforming her into an unstoppable force that wreaks havoc on, not only the X-Men family, but also the Earth itself.
3.) Gemini Man - Whether you love him or you loathe him, Will Smith returns for an intense, action packed sci-fi thriller that will surely have you booking tickets for the cinema upon it’s release.
It was only the other day I watched the trailer to Gemini Man on Will Smith’s personal YouTube channel (yes, he has started vlogging) & I was impressed. Not only did it tick every single checkbox that is usually associated with his name, it also ticked a few others. Gemini Man definitely has a Terminator vibe/feel to it, but it’s definitely not a Terminator rip-off. I actually like the idea it presents & it could prove to be global smash-hit.
Just as I mentioned above with Brad Pitt, I also have no critique of Will Smith, parse, so when he’s at the forefront of a movie, I almost always do my research, or at the very least, have a little look to see which movie he’s now promoting, as he tends to be in a lot. Not that’s a bad thing of course.. or is it??
4.) Star Wars - The Rise of Sky Walker - For an original Star Wars fan, these new movies are nowhere near good enough & probably have none of the lore, atmosphere & general feel the originals did back in the 70’s & 80’s. However, considering the long journey Star Wars has been on, combine that with the prequels & now Disney purchasing the rights, I think episodes 7 and onwards have been good/entertaining. They may not be as ‘dark’ as one would like, if not, dare I say it, family friendly, but that’s just personal preference.
The teaser trailer below offers a good insight as to what we will be on show at the end of the year (in some countries..?) & I feel as though it instills the excitement that makes you feel like a kid all over again, like it always does. The music/soundtrack is always inspiring & short shots of the different planets/places they explore, always provides that sense of adventure. Needless to say, Disney are no joke when it comes to production & with George Lucas’ name/reputation at stake, I would be stunned if this movie was universally shunned.
Roll on December & let’s see Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker go out with an intergalactic bang!
5.) Terminator - Dark Fate - I know, I know, I know.. the Terminator franchise has not been the same since 2nd film, possibly the 3rd, but this one has Linda Hamilton, which is the original Sarah Connor & Arnold Schwarzenegger, so what more of a reason do you need to go and watch this!? It may be the worst film you’ve ever seen, but at least you can say you gave it a go for the franchise’s sake.
No plot has been provided for the 6th instalment, yet I think we can all guess as to what the story will probably involve. The Terminator 2 hit the sweet spot for me back in the late 90’s (I was 3 years old when the movie came out in 1991, so my parents decided to give me a few more years before they thought I was ready for the violence). There was just something so ‘cool’ about Judgment Day & I loved the fear the T-1000 represented, it was the stuff of nightmares! Also, Arnold Schwarzenegger was, for me, in his prime at that time & playing a robot was actually the perfect role for him (be kind folks) & he played it well.
There is no trailer as of yet to the Terminator: Dark Fate, but there’s bound to be some form of quality returning to our screens when it finally arrives, especially given the fact that Sarah Connor is returning! Perhaps she only expressed commitment to the Terminator: Dark Fate provided the story was 1st class, but I suppose that’s just wishful thinking, although, you never know!
You have reached the end of the list! I hope some, if not all, have sparked your interest & they eventually serve their purposes well!
